my apologies, i now notice that i was systematically not seeing your 
replies in this thread (because i was not looking in the right place)!

i see you had also already pointed vinit to the recent CUDA and cuDNN 
additions and commented on some of the questions regarding prerequisite 
versions; so i am just sorry for introducing redundancy to the thread!

assuming GCC 8.2 is supported, i guess all the system dependencies are 
in place now.  vinit, maybe time to start a fresh round of 
experimentation in installing Horovod then?  my recommendation at this 
point would be to try and put aside conda and just see whether there is 
the right combination of modules available to successfully build and run 
Horovod?
