thanks, bjørn!  i have made a few minor edits.

my du(1) on Taito was killed mid-stream, presumably because of limitations
on the login nodes.  i will actually submit it as a job next ...

rsync(1) into the NIRD login server seems to work fine.  i am copying
selected parts of the NLPL prohect directory on Abel as an exercise, with
throughputs of upto 20 megabytes per second, it seems.

out of curiosity: bjørn, what do you know about the location of the two
systems and their network link?
